How Do I?

Importing LXR*TEST Score Data Into Grade Machine

Rationale:

LXR*TEST is designed to assess examinee performance on a particular exam. If you have need to assess overall examinee performance on multiple exams, then a gradebook application, such as Grade Machine 6.9, may prove useful. Because LXR*TEST 6.0 can export score data into a delimited text file, you can import such information into Grade Machine 6.9.

Note: The following procedure is provided to facilitate transferring your LXR*TEST 6.0 exam scores to Grade Machine 6.9. It is known that only using the import filter of Grade Machine, by itself, is insufficient in bringing in your LXR*TEST 6.0 exam scores.

Procedure:

Step 1: Export test information from LXR*TEST 6.0 into a gradebook file format.
  1. Have the desired score file open.
  2. From the File menu, choose Export to run the export wizard.
  3. You may skip creating an export template.
  4. In the File Type/Format screen of the export wizard, choose Scores as the file type and gradebook as the file format:

    Grade Machine 1

  5. Specify a destination filename; accept the default delimiter settings.
  6. In the Fields screen, only move over the fields "File header" and "Test Info":

    Grade Machine 2

  7. Click Finish to run the export.

Step 2: Import test information from LXR*TEST 6.0 into Grade Machine 6.9.
  1. From Grade Machine, open a class or create a new class.
  2. From the File menu, choose Import.
  3. From the "Import from" screen, choose the LXR*TEST import filter. Click OK.
  4. Click OK when asked to "import into assignment".
  5. Locate the exported LXR*TEST gradebook file (with the LXRGradebook file extension). Click OK to proceed with the import.
  6. Click Cancel to close the Import filter screen.
  7. Now when you look at the Scores Window in Grade Machine, you will see the name of the test imported from LXR*TEST; you will see the overall test information in the Assignments Window.

Step 3: Export student scores from LXR*TEST 6.0 into a merge file format.
  1. Have the same score file open, as you used in "Step 1".
  2. From the File menu, choose Export to run the export wizard.
  3. You may skip creating an export template.
  4. In the File Type/Format screen of the export wizard, choose Scores as the file type and merge as the file format.
  5. Specify a destination filename; accept the default delimiter settings, but uncheck the box that says "Include merge header line".
  6. In the Fields screen, only move over the fields "Student ID", "Student Name", and "Raw Score":

    Grade Machine 3

  7. Click Finish to run the export.

Step 4: Create a Custom Grade Machine Import Filter
  1. Open the same class that was used in "Step 2".
  2. From the File menu, choose Import.
  3. From the "Import from" screen, click the New button.
  4. Give the filter a name, such as "LXRTEST 6.0 Basic". Click OK.
  5. From the "Edit Import Filter" screen, verify that the panel in the upper-left says "Student Parts".
  6. From the left panel, click on "ID" and then the Append button - this will move the ID field to the right panel.
  7. Repeat the previous step by moving "Name" and "Scores" also to the right panel.
  8. Click on "Scores" from the right panel, then click the Edit button.
  9. Verify that "Score Appearance" is set to "Points".
  10. Click the Field Format button.
  11. Change the Delimited value from "Tab" to "CR".
  12. Click OK twice. Click the Save button.
  13. When asked to save the filter to a file, enter in the following filename: LXRTEST6 basic import.flt
  14. You are returned to the "Edit Import Filter" screen. Click the Close button.

Step 5: Import students' score information from LXR*TEST 6.0 into Grade Machine 6.9.
  1. From "Step 4", the "Import from" screen should still display; if not, choose Import from the File menu.
  2. Select the custom import filter "LXRTEST 6.0 Basic" from the filter list and click OK.
  3. Locate the exported LXR*TEST merge file (with the LXRMerge file extension). Click OK to proceed with the import.
  4. Click Cancel to close the Import filter screen.
  5. Now when you look at the Student and Score Windows in Grade Machine, you will see the incoming students from the LXR*TEST-administered exam.
